In the summer of 2021, I was introduced to volunteering with refugee children through GlobalFC in Kansas City. Global FC brought together refugee children who are interested in playing soccer, uniting them with other like minded children with the same goals- succeed in the United States. Global FC was a three pronged program, giving the children resources to play soccer, assigning mentors to each children, as well as establishing a tutoring program with the children to better their education levels. This third prong was vital, as many children quit school at an early age due to complicated and dangerous situations.

I wanted to continue serving refugee children and stumbled upon RefugeUC on campus. I was matched as a mentor with a junior named Arina. Through weekly hour long sessions, we built our relationship on dance, culture, and food. We eventually began discussing her future plans, and I created a study schedule and gave her resources to use while studying for competitive college entrance such as the ACT, PSAT, and SAT.
